Two years ago exactly Irish schools closed for the first time due to the pandemic and to commemorate it Athy College is taking part in the “Vaccinations for the Nations” campaign.
UNICEF are trying to raise funds to organise vaccinations for the third world countries and we are holding a fundraising event on Friday (11/3/2022) to assist. Year Heads and the Deputy Principal and Principal are sticking their necks out to show support. For €2 students will have the opportunity of throwing wet sponges at the poor victims (Year Heads, DP and P) All in good spirit and all for a good cause Well done to Athy College girls basketball team who had a decisive win over St. Leo's today. Thanks to coach Ms McTigue.
Athy College this morning started construction of an additional temporary Science room and Art room in preparation for September 2022. This follows three general classrooms which were constructed before Christmas. With numbers growing massively each year we anxiously await construction of the 600 pupil extension which has now applied for Planning permission. Thank you to Instaspace for speedy construction.
As the situation in Ukraine gets worse by the day we are lucky to have past pupil Alexey Budnyev and his two friends Margaret and Sophia visiting Athy College to talk to classes on the plight of their invaded nation. Apart from Ukrainian students many of our other students have family and friends caught up in this war and it is so important that we learn about if and what we can do.
We hope to arrange an evening next week where parents and community can come and meet with them also to learn the true story of this war. Solidarity with Ukraine Many thanks to the students, parents and staff at Athy College for their generous support and donation to the Ukraine humanitarian campaign. The extremely generous donations of goods and fund was organised by Ms C. Doyle.
Over the coming week class groups at Athy College will be visited by two young people from Ukraine who will give a presentation on the true picture of the country today. Solidarity with Ukraine Following changes to Covid regulations we will be relaxing some of our Covid regulations and reintroducing some procedures.
MASKS From 28th February (the day we return after mid term) masks are no longer compulsory. However, staff and students can decide for themselves whether they wish to or not. As previously, limited supplies of masks will be available. CHANGING ROOMS Changing rooms at the sports hall will reopen. This will allow students to change for matches and PE. No longer will students be allowed to wear PE gear coming to or going from school and normal sporting activity can resume. TOILETS The capacity of student and staff toilets will no longer be restricted. Students are reminded to make use of toilets during the designated break times as use of toilets outside of these times has hygiene and cleaning implications which we must minimise. GROUP WORK IN CLASS Group work in the classroom can resume as the proximity regulations are lifted. Both teachers and students will strongly welcome this as the dynamic of the classroom will return to being more active. ONE WAY SYSTEM The one way system around the school continues. This is for the day to day management of the school as we have nearly 600 students in an area designed for 400. However there will be changes to many of the routes external to the building as having many doors open compromises our safety and comfort. DOOR CLOSURES External doors will be closed and the entry point to the school returns to the front door only. The door goes on a timelock so it is VERY IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS ARE ON TIME FOR SCHOOL. Lateness for class also disrupts other students. UNIFORM After mid term break students are expected to be in full uniform (including school jacket). We have been fortunate to be successful in sporting activities and have also been visited by national television in the past term. Attendance at matches, outings or on television must be limited to those who have full uniform so it is in everyones interest that we present ourselves properly. If there are difficulties with the uniform please let us know. HAND SANITISERS Hand sanitising units will remain outside classrooms and students are encouraged to use them for their own protection. FOOD CLUB We are engaging with our caterers to return to the provision of hot food as soon as possible. Please bear with us on this as it takes time to reestablish some of the procedures which involved the collection of money etc which still presents a problem. We hope to begin on a trial basis from Mon 28th. MEETINGS AND ASSEMBLIES We look forward to resuming meetings with parents and assemblies with students after a long absence. This is particularly important for the new parents with whom we have not had the chance to meet at all and incoming students for Sept 2022. Graduations and Endeavour Awards will be live events this year Congratulations to 2nd year girls basketball team who defeated Ardscoil 26 - 16 today. Well done girls and well done coach Ms McTigue.
With temperature monitors, ventilation and CO2 monitors the mocks have begun. Seems like forever since we were here last. This year will be the first state exam for Junior Cycle in 3 years and for Leaving Cert their first mocks in as many years. Getting back to normal with extreme caution. Good luck to all in the exams.
Many, many thanks to Emmet from Rathsteward Applegreen for a generous donation of hand sanitising wipes which he presented to the school. - "one for everyone in the audience. Great to have neighbours like this. Thank you Applegreen
Examination FeesExamination fees for the 2022 Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle examinations have been waived.
