This academic year Athy College celebrates 80 years of delivering education in Athy. Over those years we have provided second level education, apprentice and secretarial, adult evening and post leaving certificate courses. A former teacher Stephen Cullinane was founder of Macra na Feirme and many staff have been pioneers in technological, industrial and educational change at national level.
Athy College is about to embark on its second major building programme inside a decade. Plans for the new extension, which will bring capacity to 1000, are completed and about to go to construction We will be celebrating our involvement in education and our community over the coming months. To launch our 80th year we will be celebrating student achievement by joining the Made of Athy project to unveil a plaque to past student Séamus Malone who has won acclaim internationally for his extraordinary animation work. Watch this space for more of our events for our 80th! Before you throw out that old laptop you can convert it to a Chromebook which will operate at a much faster speed and is more than adequate for most student use. Visit neverware.com and download the Cloud Ready programme onto a memory stick and load it onto your old laptop. Hey Presto! you have a pretty good Chromebook. There are instructions on the Neverware website on how to do it. So think of the environment and give your old laptop a second chance of life before you dump it
We would like to encourage more students to take to the bicycle?. This does not just take encouragement it also requires action. We need a safe space for bicycles on our routes to schools, We need locations in town to lock up bikes (cycle racks) and we need to look at a changing culture where currently individual cars are dropping one student to school.
Our weather is not a whole lot different than Amsterdam where everybody cycles. We need to exploit the potential of the Blueway and make Athy a cycle friendly destination. Ask your politicians how they can make the cycle routes to school more safe, be a tolerant driver/pedestrian on school routes and get 'on your bike'. Make this town Cycle friendly. We have planned initiatives which will reward students who cycle to school - watch this space! In order to replace non compostable/biodegradable items Athy College are currently tendering for environmentally friendly replacements for any of our plastic and styrofoam items. We hope to remove these from our system and are working with our caterers to make this happen by using biodegradable and compostable products. Athy College are planning several initiatives this year to help the environment and conservation. We ask parents and studentsfor your support No 1. Plastic Bottles We have drinking fountains throughout Athy College. If you wish to carry drinking water with you please use your own reusable bottle which you can refill from our fountains. This alone could save hundreds (if not over a thousand) of single use bottles per week
Leaving Certificate results will issue tomorrow both online and from Athy College at 10am. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students and all other local students the very best of luck tomorrow. CAO points can be calculated here and our guidance service will be available for any queries which our students may have regarding college places, etc.
Le gach deá ghuí Lovely to welcome back Spanish students to Athy College. Between Friday and today another 50 of our visitors have experienced the Barrow both canoeing and jumping in! Thanks to Johnny, Olivia, Helen and Patricia for making it happen.
Great excitement as the first plans for the new extension to Athy College are completed. Well done to architects MCOH for an excellent job. As this project advances we will see a 12million euro investment in Athy education creating both employment and a state of the art facility for students.
Athy College is delighted to be awarded the title of School of Distinction for the second year running by Trinity College. This is a very prestigious award and acknowledges successes in a variety of areas. Well done to all teachers, staff and students.
