Athy College is delighted to be involved with Crown Packaging, Athy in helping to promote our natural environment. Crown Packaging have dedicated a section of land as natural enviromnment of wildgrasses to promote bird activity adjacent to the canal. Our students had the pleasure of designing and constructing birdhouses under the guidance of Mr McDonagh through a competition sponsored by Crown Packaging. Thanks to Graham Bourne whose brainchild this venture is. All are winners as the winner (Adam Zinn Collis) and the runners up all receive prizes and the remaining birdhouses will find tenants with the support of Athy Tidy Towns. All round a great community project thanks to Crown Packaging.
Athy College's Link with RACE Academy.
Former Athy College student Robbie Smithers continues to make steady progress in the tough World of horse racing and has been getting the occasional race on the all weather track in Dundalk. Robbie, who graduated from RACE Academy (The Jockey Apprentice school) in June 2014 is now based as an apprentice jockey in Michael Halfords's yard. On Sunday 24th April Robbie got his first race on grass when he rode a horse called 'Bert Leaf' for trainer Seamus Fahey and owner PJ Davis (Robbie's Grandfather) in Gowran Park in the 4:40 race. This was quickly followed by his second race on Monday evening in Naas when he rode a horse called "Lady Ranger' for trainer Peter McCreery. Also, Conor Casey who is, at present, a student in Race Academy is now only a few weeks away from graduating in June 2016. Conor is currently based in Dermot Weld's yard. The annual Athy College Art Exhibition seems to grow in numbers each year. A capacity crowd turned out on Friday night for the event. Great credit to art teacher Linda Dempsey whose students are responsible for the magnificent exhibits.
